Surprise Proposal in Rome by Sugar Cookies

There nothing quite like a romantic picnic in a park in the middle of Rome. With a little help from Cupid, the ancient Roman god of love, this sweet picnic turns into a surprise proposal. The Westchester Wedding Planner,_6851From the photographer: Here are some beautiful shots of a recently engaged couple. We were honoured to be enlisted by the future groom to help him organise a surprise wedding proposal in Rome. We proposed the 17th century Villa Doria Pamphilj Park, an oasis of tranquillity in the centre of the city and an ideal setting for such an event. While most stories are written by engaged couples, we at Dream On Event and Design are delighted to share our emotions about this particular event we organised for Heidi and Tormod in Rome. Tormod contacted us just a couple of months before the event expressing his desire to surprise his beloved Heidi with a surprise marriage proposal in the “eternal city”, Rome. Could there be a more romantic setting than Rome?

We were thrilled to be part of this “secret” and immediately sent off a list of suggestions, locations, etc. to Tormod. Following various emails and a few telephone calls it was all decided: a picnic on the magnificent grounds of Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome. To create the ideal atmosphere we needed to know a few things about the couple and the striking element that emerged was “humour”. In fact, humour and self-irony play a significant role in their relationship and Tormod told us how Heidi used to joke with him saying he would never have the courage or romanticism to propose to her in public. Well, well Heidi…..you are in for a great surprise! Tormod had always dreamt of taking Heidi to Rome so it was not difficult to convince her to go on a short holiday with him in Italy.

A sunny Sunday afternoon in late spring, in a public park, in Rome…..what an atmosphere! Our team arrived in the park a few hours before the event to set up the picnic area and install little “clues” for our love-birds. To our surprise, the public gathered around us, curious to know what we were doing – once they were in on the “secret”, they waited excitedly for the arrival of the couple. The atmosphere was electrifying and we were wondering how Tormod was holding up, after all, for Heidi it was just the beginning of her holiday in Rome and she was care-free and happy. As we waited behind the trees, we saw them strolling hand-in-hand through the park. They stopped to read the little love messages we had inscribed on hearts placed casually along one of the paths in the park. By now, Tormod knew the big moment was just a few steps away. At first, Heidi thought these messages were left by some street artist, and then she thought maybe someone had made a recent marriage proposal. What really set her mind going was the last heart (this was pure coincidence): which held the inscription, “I need a band-aid because I scratched my knee the day I fell in love with you”! Cupid, the ancient Roman god of love, was certainly at work here – Heidi had, in fact, hurt her knee the day before travelling to Rome and so this message was really weird to her. However, she gathered her thoughts and continued to admire the beauty of the park. At this point, Tormod spotted the picnic area and headed towards us. As they approached the “proposal zone” our musicians and singer launched into “Fields of Gold” by Sting. Tormod lost no time in getting down on one knee to make his beautiful proposal. The crowd cheered and applauded on hearing “yes”. Tormod popped a bottle of Champaign to celebrate and they sat down to the wonderful picnic we had prepared for them while enjoying the musical accompaniment. Tormod surprised both Heidi and us with his determination, gallantry and romanticism. We at Dream On Event and Design wish them all the very best for the future.
